Body Dysmorphia

Body Dysmorphia: Validation, the pursuit of "perfection", PERPETUAL sadness.

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition where you spend a disproportionate amount of time worrying and obsessing over how you look or want to look like.

Your local gym is packed with people suffering from BDD or Muscle dysmorphia. It's very common and if you are reading this, you've probably dealt with it at some point.

Spending every waking hour obsessing and worrying over something about your body you LITERALLY CANNOT CHANGE like your height, the length of your limbs, eye colour, the shape of your face and so on can steal time, happiness and peace of mind from you.

If you know someone, a friend or even a client (if you are a coach) who is going through it, empathize with them and be there for them, it can be exhausting for them.

Here are some steps you can take to tackle Body dysmorphic disorder:

  1. Understand that BDD is a 'thing', accept the effects it's had so far in your life and be honest to yourself, friends and family about it.

  2. Accept and understand that there is no such thing as P E R F E C T. Perfect is defined as something completely free from faults or defects and no one is completely free from faults and defects.

  3. Try not to consume the media content that might evoke negative thoughts or the feeling that you are not enough as you are.

  4. Seek out help and positive energy from friends, family and health professionals. Look for books, podcasts and programs that promote positive mental wellbeing.

  5. Practice gratitude and mindfulness. Gratitude could be a simple "Thank you" when you wake up or suddenly remember how healthy you are. Mindfulness is simply being in the moment, consciously accepting your feelings and thoughts.
